Suspicions about the Area 51 rose In July 1947, when the army sensationally announced through a press release that it had found the remains of a rugged flying saucer in the desert. However, the next morning the army took back its words and claimed that it was actually a damaged aerostatic balloon of the US Air Force.

The Government of the United States confirmed the existence of Area 51 in 2013, after years of silence and speculation, in response under the Freedom of Information Act.

Area 51’s Actual Name

Its actual name is Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) designation: Area 51 (Atomic Energy Commission with the designation of Area 51). Although, the most commonly used name by the public is Area 51. Most people don’t even know its actual name.

As per the documents on the base released in 2013, there was no mention of extraterrestrial life. The documents released confirmed that in Area 51, the U-2 spy plane was tested for surveillance during the Cold War as part of the spy program to the Soviet Union. This was disappointing for those who believed that a contact program with extra-terrestrial life was maintained in this area.

Used for Aquatone Project in 1955

The base was created for the Aquatone Project, which consisted of the development of the Lockheed U-2 strategic reconnaissance aircraft in April 1955, but was overthrown by the Soviet Union.

Association of Former Employees of Area 51

An association called Roadrunners Internationale for former employees of Area 51 exists. Its members meet to discuss their work experiences. But with most of the information still classified, there is little that they can really talk about.
